Sports Law Seminar “Developments in Sports Law: New perspectives & continual concerns”

19.07.2023

On Sunday 11/6, the 31st International Congress of Physical Education and Sports at the Democritus University of Thrace was completed.

It was a great pleasure to be part of this Congress, where we organized the Educational Workshop “Developments in Sports Law: New perspectives & continual concerns”.

The AP Sports Law Office team along with the guest speakers/colleagues, Professor Konstantinos Remelis and Mrs. Deniz Akbiyik, undertook an effort that rarely takes place at a Physical Education Conference and in a purely athletic venue.

Along with distinguished athletes and coaches, such as Giannis Anastasiou, Dimosthenis Michalentzakis, Kostas Baniotis and Haris Koulouriotis, as commentators, legal issues of a sports nature were analyzed, as well as the crucial role played by sports law in the sports professions.

In front of a welcoming and active audience consisting of lawyers, students, club executives, journalists and professors, we answered questions and created new concerns, discussed the profession of athlete manager, the pregnancy of female athletes and the peculiarities it brings to sports -professionals and non-professionals-, e-sports and important sports decisions issued last year.

Important conclusions were drawn, such as the following:

– Specialised training for sports judges is now necessary;

– The publication of decisions of sports courts is of high importance and constitutes a fundamental requirement for the systematic improvement of legal knowledge in the field of sport, through the publication of the relevant jurisprudence;

– EU’s intention to shift the boundaries of state intervention in favour of lex Sportiva is outlined;

– E-sports are thriving rapidly and independently of traditional sports, and if we want to transmit the ideals and principles of sport to them, a unified partnership is required
