Introduction
With the completion of the regular phase of the Stoiximan Super League 2024-2025, we provide a summary-report of the 26 video analysis of reviewed incidents, as selected and analyzed by the Head of Refereeing of the Central Refereeing Committee (CRC), Mr. Stéphane Lannoy, after the conclusion of each matchday.
Error Rate in Reviewed Incidents
A total of 99 incidents were analyzed by Mr. Lannoy over 26 matchdays, covering 16 out of the 18 Greek referees and 9 foreign referees who officiated Super League matches. Among these 99 incidents, referees made the correct decision in 65 cases (65.6%), according to the Head of Refereeing, while in the remaining 34 cases (34.4%), an incorrect decision was made.
Limitations
The methodology for selecting the incidents has not been disclosed. As stated in the accompanying post of the HFF’s video analyses:
“The analysis of incidents primarily aims to educate and ensure the absolute understanding of the rules by the football audience.”
Since there are no explicit restrictions on the selection of incidents per team or per matchday, we assume that the selection is based solely on the educational value of each case.
Most Frequent Errors
From the phases analysed, it was observed that the most frequent errors were made in the failure to show a direct red card (11) at a rate of 32.4%, while the errors related to the infringement of the penalty (wrongly awarded or not awarded penalty) cumulatively amounted to 38.2% (13 cases).
Referee vs. VAR
Using as a given in which phases VAR can intervene, both are charged with a fault for the phases where the VAR could intervene. As errors of the referee only, the phases that VAR has no right to intervene by the Regulations and as VAR errors, the phases that marked as such by the Mr. Lannoy. It was observed that 76,4% of the errors involve referee and VAR errors, while 14.7% errors of the referee and 8.9% VAR errors.
Suggestion
- Disclosure of the methodology of phase selection.
- Regulation so that any team with interest can request phases for analysis. Could be defined a maximum number of requests per season or per season for each team.
- Simultaneous reference to the applicable regulation, ensuring that the analysis reflects how the spirit of the regulation (according to the analyst) is applied in accordance with its text.
